Terms of use
These terms cover your use of the RateLens Android app, the service behind it, and this website. By using RateLens you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
What RateLens does
RateLens identifies books, movies, shows and products from your camera or a search, and shows ratings that other sites publish about them. You do not need an account. Our privacy policy explains what data the app sends and keeps.
Ratings are informational
- Ratings come from third parties such as IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, Goodreads and Amazon. We label each one with its source, but we do not write, check or control them.
- Identification is automatic and can be wrong. The app may match the wrong edition, film or product, or show a rating that is out of date.
- Use RateLens as one input to your own decisions. Check the details that matter to you, such as price, edition or suitability, before you buy or watch.
Acceptable use
Please use RateLens for your own personal, non-commercial use. You agree not to:
- scrape, copy or bulk-download ratings, titles or other data from the app or service;
- call the RateLens server from anything other than the official app, or use automated scripts against it;
- reverse engineer, decompile or modify the app, except where the law allows it despite this limit;
- get around usage limits, for example by faking or rotating install IDs;
- overload, probe or disrupt the service; or
- use RateLens to break the law or anyone else's rights.
The install ID and any key built into the app exist only so the app can work. They are not a license or permission to use our server outside the app. We may block or limit any installation that breaks these rules.
Subscriptions
RateLens is free today. This section applies once paid plans are enabled.
- Paid plans are bought and billed through Google Play. The price and billing period are shown before you buy.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. You can cancel at any time in the Google Play app under Payments & subscriptions; you keep access until the end of the period you paid for.
- Refunds are handled by Google Play under its refund policies.
- The free plan includes a capture allowance. We may change the free allowance and plan features; changes to a paid plan apply from your next billing period, and Google Play will tell you about price increases.
Third-party content
Titles, cover art, posters, product details and ratings belong to their owners and are shown under those services' terms. Links to other sites are for convenience; we are not responsible for their content.
This product uses the TMDb API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDb.
Ownership
The RateLens app, name, logo and service are ours. We give you a personal, non-transferable right to use the app on devices you own or control, as long as you follow these terms. Photos you take stay yours; you let us process them only to give you results, as the privacy policy describes.
No warranty
RateLens is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises that it will be accurate, complete, uninterrupted, error-free or fit for any particular purpose.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, RateLens and the people who build it are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for decisions you make based on ratings or identifications shown in the app.
Our total liability for any claim about RateLens is limited to the amount you paid us for RateLens in the 12 months before the claim.
Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you. Nothing here removes rights you have under consumer protection law.
Changes and ending the service
We may update the app, change or remove features, or stop the service. We may update these terms; we will post the new version on this page with a new effective date. If you keep using RateLens after that, the new terms apply. You can stop using RateLens at any time by uninstalling it.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario and the applicable federal laws of Canada, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be heard by the courts in Ontario, Canada, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim there.
